About the Normalize Image Colours
Each of the red, green and blue channels is stretched independently to fill the range from 0 to 255. Because the channels move separately, this also removes a colour cast.
On a deliberately monochrome or heavily toned image that independence works against you - it will pull the image back towards neutral. Auto contrast is the safer choice there.
Scans and photographs through glass are the classic candidates: both come out flat because nothing in the frame is truly black or truly white.
