About the Video Compressor

The quality slider is the constant rate factor. It targets a perceptual quality rather than a bitrate, so a simple scene is encoded smaller and a complex one larger - which is why CRF produces better results than picking a bitrate.

Each step of about 6 roughly halves or doubles the file size. 23 is visually indistinguishable from the source for most material; 28 is a sensible default for sharing.

The speed preset trades encoding time for compression efficiency. Slower presets produce a smaller file at the same quality, and take considerably longer.

The result is written with the index at the front, so it starts playing before it has fully downloaded.

Questions people ask

How long will this take?

Roughly the length of the video for a short clip on a fast preset, longer for large files and slower presets. The page shows the job moving from waiting to converting so you can see it progressing.

Why does this tool upload my file when the others do not?

Because the software it needs does not exist in a browser. Most tools here run entirely on your device; the ones that need FFmpeg, LibreOffice or a full PDF engine cannot. Those run on an isolated worker with no network access, and the file is deleted as soon as the result is sent to you.

What happens to the file I upload?

It is stored under a random name that is not guessable, processed by an isolated worker, and deleted as soon as you download the result - and in any case automatically after 60 minutes. Uploads are never indexed, shared or used for anything besides producing your result.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
