About the Favicon Generator

Eight PNG sizes are produced along with a multi-size favicon.ico containing the 16, 32, 48 and 64 pixel versions - the sizes browsers and bookmark bars actually request.

The ICO stores each size as an embedded PNG, which every browser since Internet Explorer 11 reads and which keeps the file a fraction of the size of embedded bitmaps.

Start from a square source of at least 512 pixels. Fine detail disappears entirely at 16 pixels, so a favicon should be a simplified mark rather than a shrunken logo.

Questions people ask

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded by your own browser using the canvas API. You can watch the network panel while it runs, or disconnect from the internet after the page loads - the tool keeps working.

Do I still need a favicon.ico file?

It is worth keeping. Browsers request /favicon.ico by default even when PNG icons are declared, and some feed readers and bookmark tools only look for it.

Is your image uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs, so your image never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while the tool runs, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
