About the SHA-256 Generator

SHA-256 is the current default for integrity checking, certificate signing, blockchain work and content addressing. No practical attack against it is known.

Being fast is a virtue for checksums and a problem for passwords: a GPU can test billions of SHA-256 guesses per second. Passwords need a deliberately slow function such as Argon2id or bcrypt instead.
