About the File Hash Generator
All four digests are computed from the same bytes using WebAssembly implementations, so the values match exactly what sha256sum, md5sum or any other correct implementation produces.
The file is read locally. That matters here more than almost anywhere else: uploading a file to a website in order to hash it defeats the purpose of checking it.
SHA-256 is what you should quote and compare. MD5 and SHA-1 remain useful for spotting accidental corruption but are broken against a deliberate attacker.
Questions people ask
Does the file get uploaded to calculate the hash?
No. It is read into memory by your browser and hashed there. Nothing is sent, which is the only sensible way to verify a file you do not yet trust.
Is your file uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs, so your file never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while the tool runs, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
