About the CHMOD Permission Calculator

Read is 4, write is 2 and execute is 1, added together per group. The three digits are owner, group and others - so 644 means the owner can read and write, everyone else can only read.

Directories are different: execute permission on a directory means the right to enter it, which is why directories are 755 and not 644. A directory with 644 cannot be listed usefully.

World-writable permissions are flagged. Letting any user on the system modify a file is almost never intended, and on a shared host it is a direct route to compromise.

Questions people ask

Is your file uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs, so your file never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while the tool runs, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
