About the Filename Sanitizer
Windows forbids nine characters in a file name - backslash, forward slash, colon, asterisk, question mark, double quote, less than, greater than and pipe - and also reserves a set of device names such as CON, PRN, AUX and COM1 that cannot be used even with an extension.
Leading dots hide a file on macOS and Linux, trailing dots and spaces are silently stripped by Windows, and control characters break almost every tool that processes a list of names.
All of those are handled, so the result is a name that behaves the same everywhere.
Questions people ask
Is your file uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs, so your file never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while the tool runs, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
