About the Image Compressor
Two things control the size of a photograph: how many pixels it has, and how hard the codec is allowed to compress them. Dimensions dominate. An image displayed at 800 pixels wide but stored at 4000 is carrying 25 times more data than the page can use.
Quality between 75 and 85 is where most photographs stop looking different to the eye while the file keeps shrinking. Above 90 the size climbs steeply for almost no visible gain.
Choosing WebP as the output typically saves another 25-35% over JPEG at the same visual quality.
Questions people ask
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is decoded, processed and re-encoded by your own browser using the canvas API. You can watch the network panel while it runs, or disconnect from the internet after the page loads - the tool keeps working.
Can I compress to an exact file size?
Not directly - the size depends on the content, so the same quality setting produces very different results for a portrait and a landscape. Adjust the quality and the maximum width and watch the reported size; two attempts is usually enough.
Does compressing lose quality?
JPEG and WebP are lossy, so yes. Reducing the dimensions is lossless in the sense that the image is still perfect at its new size, which is why it is the better first move.
Is your image uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs, so your image never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while the tool runs, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
