Character Counter
Count characters with and without spaces, see the UTF-8 byte size, and check the text against common title, meta description and SMS limits.
Your result will appear here as soon as you add some input.
How to use it
- 1Paste your text into the input box, or type it directly.
- 2Adjust the options if you need something other than the defaults.

About the Character Counter
Characters are counted as the reader sees them. An emoji built from several code points, such as a flag or a family, counts as one character, and so does a letter followed by a combining accent. This uses the browser's grapheme segmenter rather than the raw string length.
The byte count is different from the character count for anything outside basic Latin: UTF-8 uses one byte for ASCII, two for most European accents, three for CJK, and four for most emoji. Byte size is what matters for database column limits and for form field validation.
The limit panel compares the text against the length search engines typically display for a page title (about 60 characters) and a meta description (about 160), and against the 160-character GSM-7 SMS segment.
Questions people ask
Do emoji count as one character?
Yes, in the character count. In the byte count they usually take four bytes, and some composed emoji take considerably more - which is why a "160 character" SMS can be rejected after only 70 emoji.
Is your text uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs, so your text never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while the tool runs, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
