About the Word Counter

A word is counted as an unbroken run of letters or digits, so hyphenated forms such as "state-of-the-art" count as one word and numbers such as "2026" count as a word. This matches how word processors and most publishers count.

Reading time assumes 225 words per minute, which is the usual figure for adult silent reading of general prose. Speaking time assumes 140 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. Both are estimates: technical material reads slower, and a rehearsed script is often delivered faster.

The frequency table at the bottom shows which words dominate the text. It is a quick way to catch repetition in an essay or to see whether a page actually mentions the topic it claims to cover.

Questions people ask

Does it count hyphenated words as one or two?

As one. "Well-known" is a single word here, the same way Microsoft Word and Google Docs count it.

Why is my count slightly different from Word?

Word counts some things differently - a standalone punctuation mark, or a number with a unit such as "10 kg", can be grouped differently. Differences are usually well under one percent on normal prose.

Is your text uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs, so your text never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while the tool runs, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
