About the Data Storage Converter

There are two sets of units and they are not the same. A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes; a kibibyte is 1,024. The gap grows with scale: a terabyte is about 9% smaller than a tebibyte.

That difference is why a "1 TB" drive shows as roughly 931 GB in Windows. The manufacturer counts in decimal terabytes, the operating system reports binary tebibytes but labels them GB.

Every unit converts through a single base unit, so the arithmetic is one multiplication and one division - both shown in the working, along with the exact factor used.
