About the Statistics Calculator

Quartiles use linear interpolation, which is the method spreadsheets use - other conventions exist and can differ slightly on small datasets.

Both the sample and population standard deviations are given. Use the sample figure when your numbers are a sample of something larger, which is almost always the case; it divides by n-1 to correct a bias that otherwise understates the spread.

When the mean and the median differ noticeably, the data is skewed and the median is usually the more honest summary. The interquartile range is the matching measure of spread, because neither is dragged around by a single outlier.

Questions people ask

Is your figures uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using standard web APIs, so your figures never leaves your device. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel while the tool runs, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
