About the DOCX Size Analyser

Reports how much of the file is image data and lists the largest embedded images, because in almost every oversized document that is where the weight is.

It deliberately does not rewrite the document. Re-encoding the images inside a DOCX risks changing how it lays out, and a tool that quietly altered your document to save a megabyte would be doing the wrong thing.

The effective fix is to resize images to the size they are displayed at before inserting them, or to use Word’s own "Compress Pictures", which understands the document model properly.

Questions people ask

Is my document uploaded?

No. A DOCX or ODT file is a ZIP archive of XML, and both are unpacked and read by your own browser. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is stored, and the tool works with the network disconnected once the page has loaded.

Does this work with .doc files from older versions of Word?

No. The old .doc format is a binary format with a completely different structure, and it is not readable this way. Save or convert the file as .docx first - Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs all do that.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
