About the DOCX Heading Extractor

Only real heading styles are found. If a document uses bold text at a larger size instead of heading styles, it looks structured to a person and is completely unstructured to software - including to screen readers and to any tool building a table of contents.

The outline is offered as indented text and as Markdown, which is the usual starting point for moving a document into a wiki or a static site.

Questions people ask

Is my document uploaded?

No. A DOCX or ODT file is a ZIP archive of XML, and both are unpacked and read by your own browser. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is stored, and the tool works with the network disconnected once the page has loaded.

Does this work with .doc files from older versions of Word?

No. The old .doc format is a binary format with a completely different structure, and it is not readable this way. Save or convert the file as .docx first - Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs all do that.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and there is no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the result. The project is funded by optional donations.
